Sessions Snaps Back at Trump: ‘Damn Fortunate’ to Have AG who Protected Rule of Law

Jeff Sessions snapped back at President Donald Trump for encouraging Alabama voters to reject him in his bid to return to the U.S. Senate, telling his old boss he was “damn fortunate” to have an attorney general who “protected the rule of law.”

“Look, I know your anger, but recusal was required by law,” Sessions tweeted on Friday night in reference to his judicial disqualification from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

“I did my duty & you’re damn fortunate I did. It protected the rule of law & resulted in your exoneration. Your personal feelings don’t dictate who Alabama picks as their senator, the people of Alabama do.”

Sessions is in the middle of a Senate Republican primary race in Alabama against former Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville. The winner of the primary is expected to be the favorite against incumbent Doug Jones, a Democrat.

“3 years ago, after Jeff Sessions recused himself, the Fraudulent Mueller Scam began. Alabama, do not trust Jeff Sessions. He let our Country down. That’s why I endorsed Coach Tommy Tuberville (@TTuberville), the true supporter of our #MAGA agenda!” Trump tweeted late Friday night.

Sessions has fallen behind Tuberville by 20 points in one poll.
